Many view the ability to travel as a luxury, but it doesn't have to be! I get it . . . in today's economy, everything is expensive! But the word travel doesn't just pertain to out-of-state or out-of-the-country. There's local travel, or you can start by exploring your state. Day trips, weekend trips, camping, or just being tourists in your own town.

The key to affordable travel is planning, being creative, and exploring your adventurous side!

Here are 10 things to do in a new town that are affordable and help to make the trip all that more special!

1: Newfound Memories

Getting up early is easy when you plan an exciting day, so let's make the most of it! Before you head out for the morning, warm up some cinnamon rolls or muffins and warp them up to keep them nice and toasty. Make a thermos of coffee or hot chocolate, and grab some of your favorite coffee mugs. I love packing everything in my travel picnic basket. It keeps everything nice and warm and has its own napkins, utensils, and blanket!

On the way to your destination, find a place to pull over, whether a nice park or a scenic overlook, and have a picnic while watching the sunrise. Being together, in a new spot, and just being in the moment is a memory you'll never forget and makes the trip all the more special.

2: Talk With The Locals

Once you have reached your destination, take time to strike up a conversation with the locals. Whether it be at the local gas station, while you're out exploring or sitting down to have a bite to eat. The locals can always tell you the best spots to explore! And it's always worth taking the time to meet someone new and have a friendly conversation.

"The world still can feel small and kind if you just smile and say hello to a stranger."

3: Visit The Local Attractions

We are big outdoor lovers and always recommend visiting a local park. Take time and enjoy the many outdoor activities they offer and immerse yourself in nature. If there's a pon, pack a fishing pole and do some fishing, or if fishing isn't allowed, feed the ducks! Go on a walk, hike, or take a nice leisure bike ride through the trails. If you don't have a bike, rent one or use one of those "ride and share" bikes. Or simply lay out a blanket and enjoy the nice, warm sun on your face while you listen to the sounds of nature, or take this time to read a book.

4: Visit a Local Farmers Market

The local farmer's markets are the best way to really immerse yourself with the locals. Be sure to grab some local produce and meat from the market and whip yourself up a home-cooked meal. We are big believers in supporting local farmers and ranchers.

5: Enjoy a Local Restaurant

Skip the fast food chains, and be sure to enjoy a local restaurant. This is your chance to enjoy one-of-a-kind menus that you can only have there. Plus, these restaurants and cafes always have the best food, coffee, and pastries.

6: Browse The Local Shops

The local "main street" or "downtown" is the best place to get the feel and experience of the local atmosphere. The shops are unique and offer one-of-a-kind trinkets. Pick up a souvenir and, at the same time, support a local business owner.

7: Enjoy The Local Festivals

Who doesn't love festivals! The best part is that many of the festivals are original to the town, meaning they are one-of-a-kind or have their own unique way of celebrating something well known.

8: Watch The Sunset

Find an open view and enjoy the sunset to end your day.

9: One Last Look at The Magic of Downtown

As you head out, take one last drive through the local downtown. The downtown will have its own magic as you drive down the main street to take in the street all lit up.

10: Roll The Windows Down

As you drive out of town, roll down your windows and open your sunroof to enjoy the cool evening air. Glance up at the stars and take in the beautiful night sky. Enjoy the remaining piece of your day.
