Changes To Arches National Park

If you're planning a trip to Arches National Park, there's one mistake that catches travelers by surprise every single year. They assume they can just show up. It’s an easy assumption to make. For decades, visiting national parks worked exactly that way: you drove to the entrance, paid your fee, and started exploring.

But the Arches have become incredibly popular, and the park had a serious problem with overcrowding. Long lines stretched for miles, parking lots filled up before mid-morning, and the park sometimes had to close its gates. So the National Park Service introduced a Timed Entry Reservation system to help manage the crowds. And if you don’t know about it ahead of time, it can quickly derail your plans.

What Is Timed Entry at The Arches?

During peak season (typically April through October), visitors entering the Arches between 7 AM and 4 PM must have a Timed Entry Reservation. This reservation is required to enter the park, not just for specific hikes or attractions.

In other words, if you arrive at the gate at 10 AM without a reservation, you’ll likely be turned away and asked to come back later. Not exactly the start most travelers imagine for their national park adventure.

How Timed Entry Reservations Work

Reservations are made through Recreation.gov and are released in advance throughout the year.

Here’s how the process works:

  • You select a one-hour entry window

  • You must enter the park during that window

  • Once you’re inside, you can stay all day

  • A small reservation fee applies

Reservations are released in monthly batches several months in advance, and they can sell out quickly during busy travel periods like spring break and summer vacation. A limited number of reservations are also released the day before, which can help last-minute travelers, but I don't recommend waiting until the last minute, as these go in the blink of an eye!

When You Don’t Need a Reservation

There are a few situations where a timed entry reservation isn’t required. You can enter the park without one if you:

  • Arrive before 7 AM

  • Enter after 4 PM

  • Have a campground reservation inside the park

  • Have certain special permits

For many travelers, entering early is actually the best option.

Even if timed entry didn’t exist, early morning would still be one of the best times to explore Arches. Temperatures are cooler, lighting is incredible for photos, and the most popular areas of the park are much quieter.

Watching the sunrise illuminate the red rock formations is one of those experiences that makes you stop and say, “Okay, this was worth waking up early.”

The Arches is one of the most incredible landscapes, but visiting it today requires a little more planning than it used to.

The good news is that with the right preparation, it’s easy to avoid surprises. And trust me—seeing those massive sandstone arches for the first time is a lot more fun when your day starts inside the park instead of being turned around at the entrance gate.
